Although the SOM algorithm itself is very simple, mathematical proofs of its properties have turned out to be rather difficult. For example the ordering of the map has only been proven in the 1-dimensional case [3, 5]. However, in practice good results are obtained also in the more complex situations. This section lists the most important mathematical properties of the SOM.
