While the weight vectors of the SOM are themselves cluster centers, even better results can be achieved by combining map units to form bigger clusters. A significant advantage with this method is that while the Voronoi regions of the map units are convex, the combination of several map units allows the construction of non-convex clusters. Different kinds of distance measures and joining criteria can be utilized to form the big clusters.
