The seminar covers the main aspects of recent research and the application of various machine learning algorithms in the analysis and retrieval of multimedia (images, video, speech, etc.) data. Due to its high complexity and variability, machine learning techniques have become the standard modeling tool to analyze this kind of complex data. Retrieval of multimedia data is different from retrieval of simple textual or structured database data. A key problem in multimedia databases is search, and the proposed solutions to the problem of multimedia information retrieval span a rather wide spectrum of topics outside the traditional database area, ranging from information retrieval and human-computer interaction to computer vision and pattern recognition. The plan is to roughly follow a new textbook: Multimedia Retrieval by Blanken, H.M.,de Vries, A.P., Blok, H.E., and Feng, L. (Eds.), Springer 2007, with some additional material. For more information about the course, please send email to markus.koskela@tkk.fi. |
Each student gives a presentation in the seminar. In addition, requirements include a project work and active participation in the lectures (one absence is allowed). |
