Main topics

Computer vision is a common term for the methods that a computer uses in analyzing its environment based on visual information. A lot of research work is done on applications in e.g. industrial automation, remote sensing, and visual inspection.

In this course one gets familiar with the main problems in computer vision and their common solutions. The course gives a general view to the research area and provides also basic knowledge so that one can specialize to some specific problem. Some main topics of the course are:

• image formation and some basic methods in image processing
• motion detection and estimation
• image segmentation, its basic principles and methodologies
• extraction of shape and other features, feature selection
• extraction and comparison of structural representations

Lectures and exercises

The lectures are given on Tuesdays at 14-16 in lecture hall T2. The first lecture will be given on January 22nd. The lectures will be held by docent Jorma Laaksonen in English. You can contact him at the lectures, by e-mail, or by phone (451 3269).

The exercises are given on Fridays at 14-16 in lecture hall T3. The first exercise is held February 1st. The exercise problem papers will be given in the exercise sessions, but it is also possible to download the exercise problems from this web page in advance. The problems and their solutions will be distributed through Edita as well. The exercises are held by MSc Mats Sjöberg (e-mail: mats.sjoberg at tkk.fi) in English. Course pre-requirements and material

Some knowledge in pattern recognition (e.g. T-61.3020) and digital image processing (e.g. T-61.5100) are helpful but not required. The course is based on the book

Requirements for passing the course

To get the course credits it is required to pass the exam, and to complete an obligatory course assignment. The course assignment must be finished and returned by Monday, May 26th at 4pm. According to the policy of the T-61 professorship, the course assignment must get passed before the exam; with the exception of exams that take place before the course assignment deadline. The first exam is on Monday May 12th at 13-16 in hall T1. After this there will be at least one exam in the autumn and one in December 2008 or January 2009.
