COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course provides basic knowledge on pattern recognition methods and their applications. The course covers the basic concepts of pattern recognition and introduces stastistical, syntactical, structural, and neural pattern recognition methods. The course is also valid for graduate students.

The lectures will be given by PhD Timo Honkela and DS Kimmo Raivio on Mondays from 10 to 12 in the lecture hall T2, starting on 15.9.2003. The first exam in the fall term is held on 9.12.2003. The second exam will be held on January or February 2004. Note that the course project work must be completed prior to attending the spring term exam or the exam scheduled for next fall. You can contact the lecturer between the lectures. Other meetings should be arranged through e-mail.

The exercises are held by MSc Markus Koskela on Wednesdays 12 to 14 o'clock in the lecture hall K (in the main building). The first exercise is held on 24.9.2003. The exercise problems are delivered in the exercises but are also available in the WWW. The exercises with solutions to the problems are also published via Otapaino press. The course includes an assignment which is organized by MSc Matti Aksela. You can ask question concerning the exercises and the assignment at the exercises or using the above email addresses.

The course is based primarily on the book "Pattern Recognition", S. Theodoridis and K. Koutroumbas, 1999, Academic press. Additional material will be presented from the book Robert J. Schalkoff: "Pattern Recognition: Statistical, Structural, and Neural Approaches" (J. Wiley, 1992). You can have a look at both of these books at the Laboratory of Computer and Information Science. Only some preannounced parts of the books are included in the course.
