ASSIGNMENT, deadline 31.1.2003 A very brief LVQ-tutorial has been added, as it appears that the method really isn't covered very well in the study material, only at the last exercise. The table below shows which assignment and with which method you are supposed to perform; Or, the same in the old written form; If the last digit of your student number is less than four, your assignment is the fruit shape classification problem. Those whose last digit is 0, 1, 2, or 3, implement method 1 (k-NN), 2 (LVQ), 3 (Bayesian), or 4 (MLP), respectively. If the last digit of your student number is less than eight but higher than three, your assignment is the texture classification problem. Those whose last digit is 4, 5, 6, or 7, implement method 1 (k-NN), 2 (LVQ), 3 (Bayesian, or 4 (MLP), respectively. Otherwise, your assignment is the handwritten digit classification problem. Those whose last digit is 8 or 9, implement method 1 (k-NN) or 2 (LVQ), respectively. If you don't have a student number, select the method you prefer more. So, if the last digit of your student number is 0, your assignment is fruit shape classification with the method 1 (k-NN), if the last digit is 1, fruit shape classification with the method 2 (LVQ) and so on. The assignment is intended to be done with matlab. If you are not
familiar with the software, we recommed you visit the Computing
centre pages on matlab for some links to pages with information on
matlab. Matlab also features quite good documentatio "built-in", which
can be accessed through the 'help' command. You can use 'help
The deadline for returning the assignments is 31.1.2003. The
experiments will take some time so start working before the last week
end. The deadline is the same for everyone taking the course this
semester, regardless of the time you intend to take the exam.
The assignment should be returned to the course assistant Matti
Aksela (matti.aksela@hut.fi)
either during the exercises or directly to room B330 (Computer Science
building). If the assistant is not there, you can leave your report in
the assignment return mailbox for the CIS courses (Tik-61) that has
this courses code written on it (located near the elevators). When you return your assignment, please include the following
information on the cover page: Course code, assignment title, method
used, your name and your e-mail address. When I have checked your
assignment, I will send you a brief e-mail on the result and, if
neccessary, what you should fix in it.
