COURSE DESCRIPTION This course provides basic knowledge on pattern recognition methods and their applications. The course covers the basic concepts of pattern recognition and introduces stastistical, syntactical, structural, and neural pattern recognition methods. The course is also valid for graduate students. The lectures will be given by M.Sc. Vuokko Vuori on Thursdays from 10 to 12 in the lecture hall T2, starting on 20.9.2001. The first exam in the fall term is held on 11.12.2001. The second exam, according to current knowledge, will be held on 4.2.2002. There will also be an exam on 31.8, 9-12, T1&2, those interested should note that the project work must be completed prior to attending the exam. You can contact the lecturer between the lectures or during office hours held on Thursdays from 9 to 10 o'clock in room C310 at the Laboratory of Computer and Information Science. Other meetings should be arranged through e-mail The exercises are held by M.Sc. Matti Aksela on Mondays 14 to 16 o'clock in the lecture hall T3. The first exercise is held on 24.9.2001. The exercise problems are delivered in the exercises but are also available in the WWW. The solutions to the problems are published via Otapaino press. The course includes an assignment. You can ask question concerning the exercises and assigment at the exercises or via email (matti.aksela@hut.fi). The course is based primarily on the book "Pattern Recognition", S. Theodoridis and K. Koutroumbas, 1999, Academic press. Additional material will be presented from the book Robert J. Schalkoff: "Pattern Recognition: Statistical, Structural, and Neural Approaches" (J. Wiley, 1992). You can have a look at both of these books at the Laboratory of Computer and Information Science. Only some preannounced parts of the books are included in the course.
Welcome to the pattern recognition course!
